Kinesiology Taping
Benefits of Kinesiology taping
Decreases pain
Reduces inflammation
Provides a stimulus that improves body awareness -
This helps increase proprioception and can improve movement patterns
Increases sensory perception
Increases postural awareness
Acts as a psychological support
Can act as a reminder, motivator for exercises
It may effect the resting tone of the muscle, which by reciprocal inhibition will effect the opposing muscle and have an effect on the whole limb
Can increase range of movement
Correction of possible joint misalignment by relieving imbalance in muscle tension
Provide support for weak or injured muscles without effecting the normal range of movement
Kinesiology tape can be use for:
Recovery of sports injuries
Inflammation
Acute (recent) muscle strains
Postural issues, by helping stimulate lengthened muscles and reduce tone in tight muscles
Plantar fasciitis
Achilles tendonitis,
Shin splints
How does it work?
Kinesiology tapes helps the recovery of soft tissue injuries and inflammation. As Kinesiology tape is left on for 3-5 days, it works 24/7, even while you are sleeping.
The main effect of Kinesiology taping is decompression of the tissue layers.
When injury or inflammation occur, the underlying nerve endings, blood vessels and lymphatics are compressed. This causes a build up of pressure which presses on the nociceptors (the sensory nerves responsible for the feeling of pain due to tissue damage) resulting in pain.
The swelling causes pressure, the pressure causes pain.
Kinesiology tape microscopically lifts the skin and the superficial fascia. This increases the size of the space between the skin and the facia, decompressing nerves, and so reducing pain. Blood vessels and lymphatic vessels are also decompressed, allowing easier movement of fluid in and out of the tissues. Fresh blood bringing oxygen and nutrients speeds up recovery and repair, and the increase in interstitial space allows a decrease in the inflammatory process in affected areas as lymphatic drainage is encouraged. The by-products created by inflammation are able to dissipate more quickly.
